Waste tires, which have represented an ecological problem for years, could soon become a valuable resource. The Podgorica Landfill is finalizing preparations for the first export of shredded waste tires to Serbia, which they expect will not only address part of the ecological challenge but also generate financial profit.

Waste car tires, which have represented an ecological problem for years, will soon be exported from Podgorica as an energy source. The landfill is finalizing preparations for the first export of shredded tires to Serbia, and the necessary documentation for trial transport is currently being obtained.

„The previous disposal of waste tires has represented a significant cost for the company. If you wanted to export them, or dispose of them in a proper and environmentally friendly way, it cost between 100 and 150 euros per ton. That is how much the state would have to pay someone to take them, process them, and handle them. At this moment, we, as the municipal landfill company, have come to a situation where we charge for these waste tires when we process them, or when we export them, which means we will not be spending enormous amounts of money. We have purchased a new multifunctional shredder, which is intended for shredding and cutting waste car and truck tires,“ says the director of the landfill, Aleksandar Božović.

The landfill emphasizes that the new shredder will enable more efficient processing of tires, but reminds that they still pose a serious ecological risk if they end up in nature or are set on fire. Therefore, they appeal to citizens to dispose of them exclusively at designated places.

„We ask citizens to take advantage of the opportunity to dispose of up to four waste tires for free at the recycling yard, instead of throwing them in municipal waste containers, in nature, rivers, or any other place where they do not belong. When waste tires are disposed of in any place not designated for that purpose, there is an immediate danger that they will end up where they should not – in contact with fire, or be set on fire for small profit, such as extracting wires or other raw materials from them. Due to such a small benefit, the health of all citizens is endangered,“ concludes Božović.

The landfill reports that they are already exporting plastic, cardboard, and waste glass, and they plan additional investments in tire processing equipment. The goal is to convert as much waste as possible into raw materials, reduce pollution, and improve the waste management system in the capital city.
