The latest cycle of works by Slavica Mijović is based on the motifs of light and shadow, as well as depictions of birds and butterflies, which, according to the author, symbolically represent beings whose souls are divided between the ego and the shadow. Connecting the spiritual and the material, the artist explores inner worlds, human existence, and the primordial beginnings of being through a recognizable symbolic language.
Her creative opus is deeply rooted in questions of humanity’s place in the universe. She finds inspiration for mystical and animal forms in ancient mythology and cave art, using the myth of the bird as a symbol of the connection between heaven and earth and the eternal human longing for freedom. In her artistic expression, she remains consistent with drawing and classical graphic techniques, with a restrained use of color, emphasizing form, volume, and tone.
In the text of the exhibition catalog, curator Ms. Senka Subotić emphasizes that the works of Slavica Mijović testify to an author who has built a recognizable style from the beginning of her artistic journey, both thematically and in the way of artistically shaping the motifs.
– Her expression is not only visual but also deeply thoughtful, and this gives the most distinctive mark to her creativity – states Subotić.
Slavica Mijović was born in 1981 in Kragujevac. She graduated and obtained a master’s degree in graphics at the Faculty of Arts in Priština – Zvečan, in the class of Professor Tomislav Trifić, as a student of the generation and recipient of the Vidovdan Award. So far, she has organized 11 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous collective exhibitions and art symposiums in Serbia, Montenegro, and the region.
The exhibition „Lights and Shadows“ will be open to the public until July 9.
