Five days after two devastating earthquakes struck Venezuela, hopes of finding survivors are slowly fading despite the arrival of additional international rescue teams.

Although the government has not yet released a final assessment, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimated that the number of casualties could be between 10,000 and 100,000, based on the strength of the earthquake and the population density of the affected area.

At the same time, UNICEF estimates that 1.8 million people, including 680,000 children, need humanitarian assistance, while the United Nations Development Programme has estimated the open material damage at 6.7 billion dollars.
