This extreme value was recorded during a horrific heatwave engulfing Europe, with an identical temperature of 41.5 degrees measured the day before in Möckern-Drewitz. This officially confirms a new national temperature record in Germany. Extreme temperatures are accompanied by unprecedented tropical nights, with the warmest night in history recorded in the city of Kubschütz, where the thermometer did not drop below an incredible 29.4 degrees.
Explosions of ammunition at former military training grounds
The hellish heat has also triggered a series of dangerous forest fires in the east and west of the country, creating additional chaos as underground detonations complicate the firefighters’ work. The most severe situation is in the forest area of Gohrischheide between Saxony and Brandenburg, where more than 16 hectares of forest are burning. Since this is a former military training ground, firefighters are battling the flames while remnants of old ammunition explode around them, prompting the activation of firefighting helicopters.
A similar scenario is unfolding in Rhineland-Palatinate, where firefighting efforts in the town of Traisen have been temporarily completely halted due to detonations of hidden weapons, and the police have preemptively evacuated residents from several streets.
Rails burst in Leipzig, trams are halted
In addition to the fires, extreme temperatures are literally destroying public infrastructure and blocking traffic. In Leipzig, tram traffic has been completely suspended and will not resume until tomorrow morning as the unbearable heat has deformed and damaged the railway tracks. Meteorologists warn that the ground and atmosphere continue to remain hot, and the DWD will officially confirm all broken records after a detailed check of all measuring stations at the beginning of the week.
