More than 1,300 people have died since June 21 due to the heatwave that hit Europe, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced.

Official data from the WHO was released after temperature records were broken across the continent, including Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary, where extremely high temperatures for this time of year were recorded.

Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, while a strong heatwave that affected Western Europe has spread to the east, international media report.

More than 191 million people across Europe have been exposed to temperatures of at least 35 degrees Celsius, and in numerous countries, warnings due to extreme heat are in effect.

The WHO stated that more than 1,300 people have died in just over a week due to the heatwave that hit Europe, emphasizing that „heat stress is often referred to as a silent killer,“ as European homes, workplaces, and schools are not adapted to such high temperatures, reports RTS.
