The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that acting and screenwriting must be done by humans to be nominated for an Oscar, not by artificial intelligence.

The Academy, which is responsible for awarding the American film industry's most prestigious award, has updated the rules for what kind of work in films and documentaries will be acceptable for the Oscars as the use of artificial intelligence is on the rise.

In recent months, there have been examples of the broader use of artificial intelligence tools and technology to replace or recreate human labor.

The latest example is actor Val Kilmer, who passed away last year but is set to be recreated using artificial intelligence technology to play the lead role in an upcoming film.

Last year, London-based actress and comedian Elin van der Velden said she created a completely fake actor using artificial intelligence to become a global superstar.

When the Hollywood writers' union went on strike two years ago, the key question was why film and TV studios were using artificial intelligence to write scripts.

Hollywood studios, actors and authors have filed lawsuits against numerous artificial intelligence companies, claiming they have violated copyrights.

However, the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has not issued a broader ban on the use of artificial intelligence in films.
