The Ukrainian National Emergency Service announced this afternoon that it is battling a fire in the Chernobyl zone.

„More than 200 people and about 60 specialized vehicles have been mobilized to fight the fire,“ the service stated on Telegram.

It added that the level of radioactivity in the affected area is being continuously monitored due to the nuclear disaster from 1986.

For now, it is not known what caused the fire.

However, a recent heatwave that hit France has spread to many countries in Central and Eastern Europe, including Ukraine.

In western Ukraine, temperatures reached or exceeded 35 degrees Celsius this afternoon.
