U.S. President Donald Trump announced on social media that Iran has requested a meeting, which will be held on Tuesday in the capital of Qatar, Doha.
Shortly thereafter, White House spokesperson Carolyn Livit confirmed to Fox News that the U.S. delegation will be led by Special Envoy Steve Vitkof, with the presence of Jared Kushner.
Technical negotiations continue
Livit stated that, in addition to the high-level meeting, technical negotiations will also continue.
„Special Envoy Vitkof and Jared Kushner will travel to Doha for high-level meetings, while technical talks will be held in parallel, so we can continue discussions on the Memorandum of Understanding,“ she said.
She added that the United States respects its commitments under the ceasefire agreement.
„As far as we are concerned, we respect the ceasefire. Violence will be met with violence,“ Livit stated.
Fragile truce under pressure
The United States and Iran signed a Memorandum of Understanding with 14 points on June 17, which provided for a cessation of months-long conflicts and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transport passes.
However, the agreement has been called into question after mutual attacks over the weekend. A new wave of tension followed after an Iranian missile struck a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, after which both Washington and Tehran accused each other of violating the temporary truce.
The White House spokesperson emphasized that the United States responded to attacks on commercial vessels at the direction of President Trump, but stressed that the administration still wants the peace process to continue.
Trump speaks out
„Iran has requested a meeting. It will be held tomorrow in Doha,“ U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social.
