US electric carmaker Tesla plans to hire another 1,000 workers at its factory near Berlin by the end of June, signaling increased production amid signs of stronger demand in the EU.

The increase in the number of employees, to a total of about 11.7 thousand, is part of a plan that envisages an increase in weekly production of about 20 percent compared to the third quarter, due to higher demand for the Model Y SUV, the American company said.

The company also expects that around 500 temporary workers will receive permanent contracts during the year, Hrportfolio reports.

In addition, the management has opened a competition to hire several hundred workers for the future production of battery cells, which should begin in the first half of next year.

In the first quarter, Tesla's sales in the EU increased by 59.6 percent compared to the same period last year, with 57.8 thousand new vehicles registered, according to data from the European manufacturers' association ACEA.

The Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg opened about four years ago, and then-CEO Elon Musk had already announced plans to expand it and build the largest industrial complex in Europe. However, some of those plans have been postponed for now due to unfavorable market conditions.

Globally, the company has been underperforming recently and is shifting its focus to developing robotics and robotaxis. It expects its advanced driver assistance system to receive EU approval in the coming months.
