In the space of the future Ar Ashem synagogue in Montenegro, the second night of Hanukkah was symbolically marked by lighting a candle, in the spirit of community, hope and light that this holiday brings.

"The second candle was lit by the Ambassador of Ukraine Oleg Gerasimenko together with the Chief Rabbi of Montenegro Luciano Moš Prelević and president of the Jewish community of Montenegro, Ninom Ofner Bokan, which once again sent a strong message of solidarity and friendship between nations. Representatives of the American and German embassies also attended the symbolic lighting of the candles," the Jewish community announced.

This act, as they pointed out, has a special significance because it was performed in the space of the future Ar Ashem synagogue, which is being built by the Jewish community of Montenegro. Rough construction work has been completed on the building, which is a big step towards the realization of a decades-long dream - the construction of the first synagogue in Montenegro.

"We remind you that the first Hanukkah candle was lit by the president of the capital assembly, Jelena Borovinić Bojović, together with the children and friends of the Jewish community, thus starting Hanukkah in the spirit of joy, togetherness and openness towards the whole society," added the Jewish community.

Unfortunately, they judge, the joy of Hanukkah these days is overshadowed by the tragic event in Sydney, where there was a mass shooting with fatal outcomes during the Hanukkah celebration. The Jewish community of Montenegro strongly condemns this act of violence, expresses its deep condolences to the families of the victims and solidarity with the Jewish community in Australia.

"Hanukkah reminds us that light is stronger than darkness. This is precisely why, in times of challenges, we remain committed to the values of peace, tolerance and the dignity of every human life," they conclude in the announcement.
