Access to cheap products from online platforms such as „Temu“, „AliExpress“ and „Shein“ will become more difficult. Starting July 1, a customs fee of three euros will be applied for products from countries that are not members of the European Union, and it will be included in the amount on which VAT is calculated.
This will affect many consumers who have been accessing more affordable products.
Surveyed citizens believe that such a fee is excessive, especially for small products. They say it would be justified if it concerned more expensive products. The three-euro fee deprives people with lower incomes of the opportunity to access certain products.
The customs fee is calculated at the time of import and will exclude goods ordered from eurozone countries.
The European Commission recently took stricter measures against one supplier, the company Temu. It was fined two hundred million euros for violating the Digital Services Act.
European Commission spokesperson Thomas Rainer states that the message of the campaign is clear: if you want access to our market of four hundred fifty million consumers, you must comply with our rules.
„If you comply with our rules, you are welcome to offer your services in Europe. If you do not comply, you will be held accountable,“ Rainer said.
Our product market surveillance law is aligned with the legal framework of the European Union.
It includes measures by competent authorities to ensure that only compliant products are on the market, guaranteeing a high level of health and consumer safety protection, environmental protection, public safety, and property protection.
