The reason for this, as stated by this portal, lies in Montenegro's position along the Adriatic and the mountains that "catch" moisture from the air. Moist sea air encounters the Orjen massif above Boka Kotorska, where it rises sharply and turns into heavy rainfall, which is why some areas record up to five thousand millimeters of rain per year. It is precisely these extremely rainy parts that strongly raise the overall average of the country. Crkvice in the hinterland of Boka is also known as the place with the highest rainfall in Europe.
Data from last year shows that tropical countries record the highest rainfall globally – Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands lead with more than 4,000 millimeters of rain per year, followed by the Philippines, Indonesia and Panama. On the other hand, the driest countries are in North Africa: Egypt and Libya.
In Europe, the rainiest country is Switzerland with 1,537 mm of rain in 2025.
After Montenegro, the list includes Iceland (1,409 mm), Norway (1,296 mm) and Albania (1,289 mm).
