"Namely, the Montenegrin police were informed by telegram from the NCB Interpol Belgrade, via the NCB Interpol Podgorica, that on April 16, in the morning hours, a person employed at the police station in Prokuplje reported that a girl, visibly upset, without shoes on, had approached her for help, demanding that she call the police," the police said.
Police officers in Prokuplje determined that the person in question is a 19-year-old person from Berane, a Montenegrin citizen.
"Furthermore, police officers have come to suspect that a minor from the Republic of Serbia, at the end of August 2025, reached an agreement with the father of the injured nineteen-year-old girl from Berane, that she would marry the aforementioned minor, in exchange for a certain amount of money. This handover was carried out and this female person went to live in the Republic of Serbia with the minor," the statement states.
Police officers from the Berane police, acting on the aforementioned telegram, found and brought the parents of the injured girl, AK (51) and GK (49), to the official premises of the Berane Security Department and collected information from them for the record.
"The prosecutor at the Higher State Prosecutor's Office in Bijelo Polje was informed of the incident and stated that AK's actions constitute elements of the criminal offense of human trafficking, and this person was deprived of his liberty on his order," the Police Directorate emphasized.
He will be brought before the prosecutor in charge within the legal deadline for further proceedings with a criminal complaint on suspicion that, through abuse of trust in order to gain unlawful material benefit, he sold his daughter for a sum of money to a person from the Republic of Serbia for the purpose of entering into an illicit marriage.
"The injured party has been placed in a safe location in the Republic of Serbia," the Police Directorate concluded in a statement.
