The Reds have taken a step back in the fight for the top four, remaining fifth with 49 points, two points behind and a game in hand over Aston Villa. On the other hand, Brighton are eighth with 43 points, the same as Everton (a game in hand).
The home team took the lead in the 14th minute, when Danny Welbeck headed in a cross from Diego Gomez.
The guests equalized in the 30th minute through Miloš Kerkez.
However, Welbeck brought all three points to Brighton, with his second goal of the game in the 56th minute.
Liverpool will host Fulham in the next round, after the international break, before facing Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals, and then Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.
