Netanyahu has previously stated that Iran is allegedly planning a “nuclear holocaust” against Israel, warning that, without Israeli action, Iranian nuclear facilities such as Natanz, Fordow and Bushehr could become synonymous with death camps such as Auschwitz, Majdanek and Sobibor.
Zakharova questioned such claims, recalling that Iran declared war on Nazi Germany back in 1943, during the reign of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. According to her, historical facts clearly show who is responsible for the Holocaust – Nazi Germany, fascist Italy and their allies, including collaborationist regimes across Europe.
She further criticized Israel for what she claims is a lack of condemnation of Ukrainian authorities since 2014, stating that certain figures associated with historical crimes against Jews have been declared national heroes. Among them, she mentioned Symon Petliura and Yaroslav Stetsko.
Zakharova also claimed that the Bank of England was among the financiers of the Nazi party, adding that the same structures are today supported by the authorities in Kiev, whom she accused of pursuing policies based on ethnic and linguistic divisions.
Speaking about Israeli statements, she emphasized that the use of terms like Auschwitz, Majdanek, and Sobibor in a contemporary political context is an insult to the victims of World War II and the Holocaust, as well as to the soldiers who liberated the Nazi camps.
She particularly emphasized that the Bushehr nuclear power plant is a civilian facility, which, she stated, has been confirmed repeatedly by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Zakharova also recalled the statement of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who said that a solution to the Iranian nuclear issue should be sought through diplomacy and the renewal of the 2015 agreement (JCPOA). Lavrov stressed that the agreement provided for strict controls over Iran's nuclear program and the prevention of its military use.
"It would be a significant achievement if the current negotiations between Iran and the United States led to a result similar to that of 2015," Lavrov concluded.
