For the third year in a row, and the fifth time in seven matches in the last eight years, Real Madrid have been fatal to Manchester City in the knockout stages of the Champions League – but never more convincingly than this season.

The "Kings" eliminated the "Citizens" in the round of 16 of the elite competition with a 5:1 aggregate score.

The absolute European record holder celebrated last Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabeu (3:0), with a hat-trick from Federico Valverde, and tonight confirmed their passage with a triumph at the Etihad (2:1).

Pep Guardiola's men went on the offensive, determined to score as soon as possible, and they came close in the third minute, when Ryan Sherkey hit the frame of the goal. On the other hand, in the 17th minute, Vinicius Junior also hit the frame of the goal.

In the 20th minute, Bernardo Silva's unbelievable stupidity, which stopped Vinicius' shot with his hand, led to a direct red card from Clemon Turpan and a penalty. Vinicius took responsibility for the mistake, and unlike eight days ago, this time he beat Gianluigi Donnarumma and practically finished the job of advancing.

Vinicius then missed two shots to put an end to this double-header, and the penalty came in the 41st minute. City took a corner, Jeremy Docu made a great pass down the left, set up Erling Haaland, who was lucky enough to get the ball, and the Norwegian didn't get it as he wanted, but luckily for him it ended up behind Thibaut Courtois.

At the start of the second half, Haaland could have scored a second goal, but his shot was saved by Andrey Lunin, who replaced the injured Thibaut Courtois at half-time.

In the 70th minute, Aurélien Choumameni was close to scoring, but Donnarumma made a fantastic save. A few tens of seconds later, after a corner kick, Kylian Mabpe, who had returned from injury, tried, but the ball went wide of the post.

Three minutes later, Šerki shot strongly, but not precisely enough.

About ten minutes before the end of the regular period, Ait-Nuri had a good chance, but Lunjin was up to the task again and, judging by everything that followed, he worthily replaced the first goalkeeper, Courtois.

Vinicius brought Real victory in the second leg with his second goal of the match in practically the last attack of the match. Chuameni crossed brilliantly from the right, and the Brazilian eluded the keeper and from the penalty area checked Donnarumma for the final 2:1.

Interestingly, four goals were disallowed due to offside, two on each side.

Real Madrid now awaits Bayern Munich, who are defending a huge 6:1 win over Bergamo at home tomorrow night, and it would take a miracle to avoid a Spanish-German blockbuster in the quarterfinals.

The current European champion, Paris Saint-Germain, eliminated Chelsea with an aggregate score of 8:2.

The Saints took a big step towards the quarter-finals six days ago when they won 5-2 at their home ground, Parc des Princes, and tonight they were equally convincing at Stamford Bridge (3-0).

All doubts about progressing were removed by the double scorer from the first match, Hvič Kvaracheli, with a goal in the sixth minute.

Bradley Barcola doubled the Parisians' advantage with a Euro goal in the 14th minute.

The final score was set by young reserve Seni Majulu with a beautiful goal from the edge of the penalty area in the 62nd minute. Even then, the home team's fans began to leave the stadium en masse.

PSG will play against Liverpool or Galatasaray in the quarter-finals.

The English honour, at least for this evening, was preserved by Arsenal, who justified their role as favourites and eliminated Bayer Leverkusen. After a 1-1 draw in Germany, the Gunners won the second leg at the Emirates (2-0).

Mikel Arteta's team were a far better opponent tonight and fully deservedly earned a place in the top eight.

The home team took the lead in the 36th minute with a goal from Eberechi Eze.

Declan Rice put an end to the match with a goal in the 62nd minute of the match.

Arsenal have now set up a quarter-final with Sporting, the first match to be decided after the first night of the round of 16. The Lisbon team had earlier pulled off an incredible comeback to eliminate Norwegian sensation Bode Glimt 5-3 on aggregate (0-3 in Bode, 5-0 in Lisbon).
