The first half did not meet the expectations of the fans, especially those of the Netherlands, which did not seriously threaten Morocco’s goal even once. The game was mostly played in the midfield without much risk.
In the second half, the Netherlands did not show much either, but in the 72nd minute, they took the lead with a goal from Gakpo assisted by Samerville.
Morocco then took complete control of the match. They had over 80 percent possession, but serious chances were lacking against the excellent Dutch defense.
And when everyone expected the final whistle, in stoppage time, Diop scored and brought Morocco to a deserved equalizer and extra time.
Morocco continued to attack constantly in extra time and created good opportunities, while the Netherlands was completely disappointing. There were no new goals, so it was clear that penalties would decide the team advancing to the round of 16.
The Moroccan players were more skillful in taking penalties and ultimately managed to eliminate the Netherlands.
In the round of 16, Morocco will face Canada, which previously eliminated South Africa. This duel is scheduled for July 4 and will be played in Houston.
