Moldovan President Maja Sandu has called for Moldova to unite with Romania, arguing that such a move could accelerate the country's EU membership.

"Unification with Romania would allow us to join the EU more quickly and could be beneficial to us," Sandu told the French newspaper "Le Monde", Srna reports.

She added that Moldova's accession to the EU could take place in two phases, initially without the Transnistria province, but that a more desirable scenario would be for that province to first reintegrate into Moldova before joining the Union.

Sandu stated in January that she would vote for Moldova to join Romania if a referendum were held, citing the difficult international situation and the challenges the country faces as a sovereign state.
