"We strongly condemn the recent attacks launched by Israel against Lebanon, which have led to a large number of civilian casualties and extensive destruction of civilian infrastructure," a Commission spokesperson said in Brussels today.
"Such actions represent a very serious escalation and an unacceptable threat to civilian lives and regional stability. We therefore reiterate the need for full respect for international law and humanitarian law, which require the protection of civilians," he added.
More than 200 dead in attacks
The comments came after more than 200 people were killed and over a thousand injured in a massive wave of Israeli airstrikes in Beirut and other parts of the country on Wednesday.
Israel insists Lebanon is not included in the US-Iran ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump late Tuesday. Lebanon is observing a day of mourning today.
EU use Lebanon
"On this day of mourning, allow me, also on behalf of the European Union, to express our deepest solidarity with the people of Lebanon," the Commission spokesperson added. "Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and those affected by the severe level of violence, as well as with the displaced people suffering across the country."
The spokesperson added that the EU "will continue to work with partners to support de-escalation and a sustainable cessation of hostilities."
Brussels also supports efforts to disarm the pro-Iranian militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon, the spokesman said, pledging support for the Lebanese state in education, digitalization and judicial reform.
"Our commitment to Lebanon remains unwavering, we stand with Lebanon and the Lebanese people," the spokesman said.
