After leading his team to the Europa League final with 15 saves against Flensburg, the Montenegrin goalkeeper also excelled in the fight for the trophy. Melzungen defeated Kiel 24:23 in Hamburg and won the Europa League, and Simić finished the match with 13 saves and fully deservedly received the award for the best player of the final match – MVP.
Baranin thus rounded off his return from a serious knee injury that kept him out of action for months. His absence was felt by both Melzungen and the Montenegrin national team, but he returned when needed most and led the German team to historic success.
The final brought a great fight and uncertainty until the last seconds. Kiel managed to equalize with less than a minute left, but after a Parondo timeout, Melzungen made a great play, which was completed by David Mandić for the final 24:23 and a big celebration for the German club.
Kiel, led by the phenomenal Andreas Wolf, failed to find a solution for the spirited Simić and the solid Melzungen defense.
Third place in the final tournament went to Flensburg, which defeated Montpellier in the bronze medal match – 32:30.
