Menšik served exceptionally well in the first two sets, not allowing his opponent a single break point, and one break was enough for him to take a big 2:0 lead.
Fonseca has already turned a 0-2 deficit twice in this tournament, against Dino Prižmić and Novak Đoković, and it seemed that he was heading towards that when he opened the third set with 2-0. However, Jakub quickly returned the break and turned it around to 3-2. At 3-3, the Brazilian made a break again, but did not save it, as he missed the opportunity at 5-4 to reduce to 2-1. In the marathon game, he missed a set point, and Menšík realized the fifth break point and leveled at 5-5. In the 11th game, the Czech neutralized the break chance and took a 6-5 lead. Another game followed that lasted over 12 minutes, in which Fonseca saved as many as six match points and fought for a tie-break. However, Menšík celebrated in the 13th game with a 7-3 victory and advanced.
His next opponent will be Alexander Zverev, who also eliminated Spaniard Rafael Hodaro in three sets.
