The tournament is held in the year when Montenegro celebrates 20 years since the restoration of independence, which gives this event special significance and symbolism. The competition includes several tournaments – Montenegro Open (groups A and B), Mediterranean Rapid Championship for ages under 14 and under 20, as well as an open blitz tournament.
The competitions will take place at the Danilo Kiš Secondary Mixed School, while the participants will be accommodated in the Slovenska plaza tourist complex, one of the recognizable symbols of the Budva Riviera.
It will be played according to the Swiss system in nine rounds, and the prize fund of a total of 39,000 euros is attracting special attention, which places this tournament among the most significant in the international competition calendar.
"We are very honored that Montenegro Open 2026 is being held in the year when we celebrate 20 years of independence of Montenegro. We expect a strong international response and top-notch chess, but also that through this event we will further promote our country as an attractive chess and tourist destination", announced the Chess Federation of Montenegro.
Montenegro Open 2026 will thus combine top-notch chess and a Mediterranean setting, with the additional symbolism of the anniversary of Montenegrin independence, confirming the importance of Montenegro on the international chess scene.
