Herzog halts Netanyahu pardon

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has decided to postpone pardoning Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on corruption charges, opting instead to try to negotiate a plea deal.

Netanyahu has been on trial for six years on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust in three separate cases, but he denies breaking any law, calling the charges a "witch hunt."

Herzog is under pressure from Netanyahu, his allies and US President Donald Trump to grant the prime minister a pardon, although he has delayed because opinions in Israel are relatively divided over the trial, The New York Times and The Times of Israel reported.

“President Isaac Herzog considers reaching an agreement between the parties in Prime Minister Netanyahu’s cases to be the right and proper solution,” Herzog’s office said.

They also added:

"The President believes it is right to first, before discussing the pardon request itself, exhaust the process that could lead to an agreement between the parties, outside the walls of the court."

Netanyahu became the first sitting Israeli prime minister to be brought to trial in 2020, when he was charged with allegedly accepting cigarettes and champagne in exchange for political favors, according to Upi.
