Rising oil prices, fueled by the war in Iran, have resulted in rising diesel and gasoline prices in Hungary, further exacerbating the problems Orban faces ahead of parliamentary elections on April 12, in which he will fight to stay in power after 16 years.
Called a government meeting
“The Ukrainian oil blockade and the war in the Middle East are causing prices to rise. Europe must face reality: we must review and lift all sanctions on Russian energy,” Orban wrote on X. He added that he had called a cabinet meeting “to protect Hungarian families” from high fuel prices and stressed that fuel prices must not be allowed to rise “to an unbearable level.”
Hungary is facing additional pressure because Russian oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline have been suspended since late January, when Kiev claims the pipeline was damaged in a Russian attack. The disruption has resulted in political tensions with Kiev.
