The United States is still considering the possibility of punishing certain NATO allies that have not supported Washington during the conflict with Iran, a US official told ABC News.

"The US could move its troops from NATO countries that have proven unreliable to other Alliance countries that Washington believes have provided support in some way during the conflict," an administration official said, Srna reports.

ABC News states that it is currently unclear how far the plan has progressed, nor which countries could be included in this potential decision.

It is not known whether US President Donald Trump informed NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte of these intentions during a meeting in Washington.

Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO allies for insufficient defense spending, as well as for refusing to support military action against Iran.

He has stated that he intends to review the role of the United States in the Alliance.
