With a victory over Azerbaijan (94:35), along with Bulgaria's triumph over Ukraine (81:66), the Montenegrin women's basketball team has theoretically qualified for the second phase of the EuroBasket qualifiers.

It remains to be decided who the "reds" will face in the draw scheduled for July 23rd in Munich, and the matches will be played in two "windows" with three matches each - from November 8th to 18th this year and February 7th to 17th next year.

Jelena Škerović's team routinely dealt with the underdog, and the most efficient were Ksenija Šćepanović with 21 and Andrea Glomazić with 16 points.

"I'm satisfied, especially with the game after the 1st quarter when we simply couldn't hit the jumpers and free throws. I'm satisfied with the reaction of the young players, especially after halftime, when we talked a little more in the locker room about the things they need to improve, how to play. I'm satisfied with the second half, how it all looked."

It seems that the desire was evident in the young players and they took advantage of the opportunity.

"These players never lack desire. That's not a problem at all. They also showed fighting spirit, especially in defense, we had a lot of counterattacks and I'm happy that they didn't give up until the last second, but kept the level of play constant."

  • Will the most convincing victory ever be remembered?

"It will. We all know that Azerbaijan is not at our level, but the young players used their time to gain international experience. They showed concentration, desire and will to keep it up for the full 40 minutes."

  • The next match is against Bulgaria, the last one in this first phase. Are you sure you'll go for the win there too?

"Normally, we're going for the win. We lost there by four points, so we'll give it our all. We're hoping for a favorable result, but we're going back to what we set out to do, to play better basketball from match to match and to have our concentration be greater and greater depending on the opponent."

  • Milica Jovanović, Jovana Pašić and Jelena Vučetić said their farewells in a fitting way. You coached them for a long time, and they emphasized after the last European Championship that they are particularly attached to you. You played with Milica a long time ago, at the beginning of her career. How did you see that detail?

"I am very happy for them and I am satisfied that they had the opportunity to finish here in front of the Bar audience, in front of a full hall. It is a really nice feeling, to receive gifts and simply to have the whole of Montenegro thank them for what they have provided and for the long career they have given to the Montenegrin national team," concluded Škerović.
