Karlos Alcaraz began his title defense at the Monte Carlo Masters with a victory.

The world's number one tennis player outclassed the diminutive Argentine Sebastian Baez in two sets – 6:1, 6:3 after 70 minutes of play.

Alkaraz won the first set by breaking his rival's serve three times.

In the second set, the guy from Murcia led 4:1, but then some uncharacteristic errors brought Baez back into the match. The Argentine reduced the lead to 4:3, had two game points to equalize, however, Carlitos made another break, and then served for the round of 16.

This is the Spaniard's 14th consecutive triumph on the slowest surface, and interestingly, his 16th consecutive victory over the Argentines (he has only lost once).

Alcaraz will play against Tomas Martin Echeverria or Terence Atman in the round of 16.

Earlier, Janik Siner lost a game in a row, defeating Igo Amber – 6:3, 6:0.
