A new generation of 15 Peace Corps volunteers was sworn in today, officially beginning their two-year service in communities in Montenegro.

The Peace Corps announced that the ceremony, which was held in Podgorica, marked the dedication of the volunteers and the strong partnership between the United States of America (USA) and Montenegro.

Chargé d'Affaires of the US Embassy Michael Keyes highlighted the significance of this year's generation, emphasizing that their service coincides with the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the USA.

"Service has always been at the heart of the American story, and by coming to Montenegro you are adding your own chapter, showing that personal engagement can contribute in a very real way to building peace and friendship," Keys emphasized.

The statement said that representatives of the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation and the Peace Corps of Albania and Montenegro also addressed the audience, expressing strong support for the volunteers.

They emphasized the importance of cooperation in the field of education, as well as the importance of direct people-to-people connections in strengthening bilateral relations.

"During the ceremony, the volunteers presented elements of Montenegrin culture that they had acquired during the intensive twelve-week training, including language skills and understanding of local traditions. These skills will help them prepare for their roles as English language teachers and partners in communities across Montenegro," the statement said.

It is stated that a group of 15 volunteers will now move to their host communities, where they will live with Montenegrin families and work alongside local teachers and collaborators.

"In addition to classroom instruction, it will provide support for extracurricular programs, youth development activities, and community-driven initiatives," the statement added.

Peace Corps volunteers operate in Montenegro at the invitation of the Montenegrin Government.

Founded in 1961, the Peace Corps bases its mission on service, cultural exchange, and mutual understanding — values that continue to strengthen and develop the partnership between the U.S. and Montenegro.
