Patriarch Gavrilo Dožić did not remain silent in the face of fascism: patriotic, anti-fascist speeches, pre-war visits to synagogues and Jewish communities, condemnation of the pogrom of Jews and refusal to recognize Hitler's remaking of the Polish church. Arrested and imprisoned until the end of the war, stated the Deputy Prime Minister of Montenegro, Momo Koprivica.

In February 1941, he drafted a Memorandum of Opposition to the Tripartite Pact. On March 23, the Synod sent a letter of opposition, and on March 27, he scheduled the Assembly of the Serbian Orthodox Church, exerting pressure on the government, when the people also said a historic NO. "If it is to live, let us live in holiness and freedom. If it is to die, let us die for holiness and freedom."

"The great of Montenegro, Serbia, Yugoslavia and Europe! March 27, with all the consequences and suffering, symbolizes defiance, love of freedom and resistance to the greatest evil of humanity, and also symbolizes the resistance of the brave Patriarch Gabriel," Koprivica said in a post on the X network.
