An investigation has been launched against Maribor Mayor Saša Arsenovič on suspicion of committing multiple criminal offenses, including incitement to receive gifts, bribes, and benefits for illegal mediation, after criminal investigators from the Slovenian National Bureau of Investigation (NPU) conducted searches of both the Maribor municipality's premises and the mayor's home in mid-March.

The court order in which the investigating judge approved the search of the house and other investigative actions states that Arsenovič is reasonably suspected of inciting the commission of the criminal offense of unlawfully accepting gifts, accepting bribes, receiving benefits for illegal mediation, and unlawfully accepting gifts, reports N1 Slovenia.

It is noted that Arsenović, as mayor, demanded from Pole at least 200,000 euros for a person who has not yet been identified, to adopt a decision or initiate a procedure for the adoption of a municipal detailed spatial plan (OPPN) for land in Studenci. Without an adopted OPPN, Tomaž Polak's company SH Global would not be able to implement the planned investment, the construction of a new settlement.

In addition to the mayor, the owner of the company SH Global Tomaž Polak, the president of the Maribor Sports Association, is also suspected of criminal acts in the same case. Tomaz Barada, as well as Slavko Korze i Jaka Dolenc.

The investigation was proposed by the prosecutor of the Specialized State Prosecutor's Office (SDT) at the initiative of the NPU.

By court order, the investigating judge ordered a search of the apartment and other premises, the seizure and examination of items such as personal notes, as well as telephones, computers and other electronic devices that could reveal the content of conversations between the suspects and other persons.

As reported by Slovenian media, the National Investigation Service (NPU) investigation against the mayor of Maribor and several other suspects also used covert investigative measures, including secret observation and surveillance of electronic communications by wiretapping and recording.

Arsenovic is suspected of a total of 17 criminal offenses in the field of economic crime and corruption, including bribery and abuse of office. He has denied the charges and stressed that he is not considering resigning.

"My conscience is clear and I have done nothing illegal," he said, adding that he would defend his innocence with facts in any proceedings, "if they ever come to pass."
