Cyprus has put civil services on alert, closed schools and launched evacuations where necessary, after a drone hit the British RAF Akrotiri base on the island.

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides said today, March 2, that the security of the country and its citizens is the government's highest priority.

"We are in a region of particular geopolitical instability, with numerous challenges and problems, which is currently going through an unprecedented crisis. We are doing what we have to do, with the security of our country and our citizens as our main concern," he said, tportal reports.

Christodoulides stressed that Cyprus, as the closest European Union member state to the Middle East and a popular tourist destination, remains committed to not "engaging in any military operation."

He added that the country will continue to fulfill the humanitarian role it has had in the previous period, acting "as part of the solution, not the problem."
