The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said today (April 10) that Lebanon is facing a food security crisis as the war in Iran disrupts the supply of goods within the country.

"What we are witnessing is not just a displacement crisis, it is quickly becoming a food security crisis," said World Food Programme Director Alison Oman.

She warned that food is becoming increasingly unavailable due to rising food prices and growing demand among displaced families.

In mid-March, WFP released an estimate that around $200 million would be needed to support humanitarian operations over the next three months.

As WFP Regional Director for the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe, Samer Abdeljaber, stated at the time, "the food security situation in the Middle East was already difficult even before the current crisis, and recent events have made it worse."
