"They want to talk and I agreed. They should have done it earlier. They waited too long," the US president said.
Trump did not specify who he would speak with or say whether it would happen on Sunday or Monday.
Iranian President Masoud Pazakhstani said the Provisional Governing Council, which includes him, the head of the judiciary and a member of the powerful Guardian Council, has temporarily taken over the duties of the supreme leader following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Trump said that some of the people involved in recent talks with the US are no longer alive.
"Most of those people were killed. Some of the people we dealt with are dead, because it was a 'big hit,'" he said in an interview with Atlantic.
In an online post Trut soušalTrump said that the US military has so far sunk nine Iranian warships.
"I have just been informed that we have destroyed and sunk nine Iranian warships, some of which are relatively large and important. We are going after the others - they will soon be floating on the bottom of the sea! In the second attack, we have largely destroyed their naval headquarters. In addition, their navy is doing very well," Trump said.
