"We are not some piece of ice. We are a proud population of 57,000 people who work every day as model citizens of the world with full respect for all our allies," Nielsen told Reuters, referring to Trump's statement that he remembers Greenland as a "big, poorly managed piece of ice."
Nielsen said that it is important for Greenland to preserve as a world community a defense alliance that is respected and where international law is respected by all parties.
"Those things are being called into question now and I think all allies should come together to try to maintain them. I hope that happens," he said.
