The match, which served as preparation for the upcoming World Cup, was marked by shouts directed at visiting Muslim players, which forced the organizers to warn the audience on several occasions.
Fans chanted "whoever doesn't jump is a Muslim," which quickly spread on social media. Spanish media are pointing out that this was also an indirect message to the unpopular Lamino Jamal, whose "El Prat" stadium is Espanyol's, Barca's city rival.
"Racism shouldn't be given importance, we're used to it," Jamal said after the match.
The Spanish Football Federation condemned the fans' behavior on social media, saying it was "against racism in football and condemns any act of violence in stadiums."
Even harsher was the Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente, who demanded that such people be removed from society.
"I am disgusted and absolutely reject any form of xenophobia or racism - it is intolerable," De la Fuente said at a press conference.
"I don't know what the exact protocol is, but I think it was the right decision to display the message on the scoreboard and issue a statement. Those who chanted that are a disgrace, and most of the stadiums booed them. There's nothing to add. They don't represent football. They abuse football, just as they do in other areas of life. Such people should be removed from society - the further away, the better," he concluded.
Both teams are preparing for the World Cup, which begins on June 11 in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Spain is in Group H with Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, while Egypt is placed in Group G with Belgium, New Zealand and Iran.
