The International Football Federation (FIFA) has opened talks on the possible introduction of a rule that would require all professional teams to have at least one young domestic player on the field during matches.

As they stated, a concrete proposal will be prepared in the coming year, through consultations with all relevant stakeholders in football. The aim of this initiative is to increase playing time for young players that clubs develop in their own academies, which would also reduce the purchase of players from abroad.

As announced by FIFA, "a regulatory obligation is being considered that senior teams must have at least one home-grown player from the under-20 or under-21 category on the pitch at all times."

Such a rule would be stricter than existing regulations in national and international competitions, including the Champions League, where a certain number of home-grown and locally trained players are required in the squad, but not required to play.

According to UEFA rules, clubs in the Champions League must have at least eight places for "locally trained players" within a maximum roster of 25 players.

A locally trained player is one who has spent at least three full seasons, between the ages of 15 and 21, with his home club or another club from the same country.
