Illegal parking and stopping in Podgorica is becoming more frequent, as is ignoring the rules by drivers, the Directorate for Inspection Affairs is aware - Director Branko Kovačević says that the fines so far have not yielded the expected results.
"Today, these are fines that date back to the past and they are for illegally parking a vehicle, the fine is 60 euros, the part for moving illegally parked vehicles is 60 euros and the part for the vehicle when it is in the parking lot is five euros," said Branko Kovačević, director of the Inspection Affairs Directorate.
Kovačević believes that the new penal policy will bring much better results.
"A few days ago, a new law on paying fines and the eight-day deadline came into effect, and so far the fine has been reduced by 30 percent, and in the future it will be as much as 50 percent," he pointed out.
Although at first glance it appears that the penalties are less, Kovačević points out that the opposite is actually the case.
"If today we have a fine of 60 euros and if this 50 percent is paid, it amounts to 30 euros, if the same fine amounts to 150 euros, it will be 75 euros. It will be a larger amount when paid this way, but citizens are encouraged to pay within that period and take advantage of the benefit within eight days," he concludes.
Toughening penalties for illegal parking and stopping is the only effective way to solve long-standing traffic problems in Podgorica, said Kovačević.
