The position of young people in Montenegro has seen some progress in the past ten years, but challenges still remain, especially in the area of employment and greater political engagement.

This was assessed by public policy researcher Aleksandra Zeković in the Morning Program of RTV Podgorica, on the occasion of Youth Week, which is celebrated from March 2 to 8.

The position of young people in Montenegro, according to the latest available research by the NGO Prima, is better than in the countries of the region, but far from that of their peers in the European Union, says public policy researcher Aleksandra Zeković.

"There are also strides in the sense that the rate of reduction is not among young people. These are those who are not in education, nor employed or similar. The economic situation of young people, those who are long-term unemployed or similar data is better, although there are differences, for example, long-term unemployed young people and the generally unemployed," said public policy researcher Aleksandra Zeković.

Gender differences are also pronounced – young women, she adds, are more likely to risk economic insecurity than men. While economic stability is a prerequisite for young people to become independent, few of them hold responsible positions. That is why, she says, it is important for young people to be politically active and learn how to advocate for change with decision-makers.

"Maybe some public discussions, some gatherings, these are channels through which they can, but they need to learn how to lobby, how to do public advocacy towards those who make the decision whether to be disobedient or never satisfied. I think that's the only way for them not to agree to compromises and push. If they don't push it when they are young, I don't know when they will," Zeković points out.

Young people in Montenegro continue to face economic and social challenges, but active participation and support in education and employment are key to their independence, said Zeković.
