Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he did not believe the breakup of NATO was likely despite differences between the US and its European allies.

"I don't think we can talk about the disintegration of the Alliance. Because, one way or another, the European component will grow," Peskov said.

Peskov noted that it would be "reckless and short-sighted" to underestimate NATO's power and suggested that changing circumstances in the world will force the Alliance to transform accordingly.

Peskov did not rule out the possibility that Europe will eventually form its own military alliance.

"This foundation will continue to strengthen and grow. Europe will take steps to form some kind of defense alliance," Peskov stressed.
