Romanian lawmakers have voted no confidence in the pro-European government of Prime Minister Ili Bolojan, private television station Digi24 reported.

"Can someone tell me how Romania will function from tomorrow, do you have a plan?" Boloian told MPs before the vote.

Bolojan had led a minority government since late April, but the Social Democrats, as the largest party in parliament, called on him to resign and then left the four-party pro-European coalition.

The Social Democrats then joined forces with the far-right opposition to file a motion of no confidence.

The current coalition came to power 10 months ago with the aim of curbing the growth of the far right after a series of polarizing elections.

The new government began to reduce the deficit and barely avoided a drop in investment rating to the lowest level.

The next general elections are scheduled to be held in 2028, Srna reports.

Romania has never held early elections, and analysts believe the likelihood of one happening now is slim as the opposition far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians is leading in the polls.
