They said they waited all Sunday for the answer from the Railway Infrastructure of Montenegro to the question of when the faults would be fixed, but at least the signaling at this level crossing was put into operation within that period.

"We would like to inform you that the device has been repaired and that the Šušanj road crossing has been put into operation. We emphasize that ŽICG is taking all available measures, in accordance with technical and financial capabilities, to permanently resolve the problem, while maintaining traffic safety. The Signaling and Safety Facilities Service continuously monitors the condition of the equipment, replaces worn-out parts and carries out regular preventive inspections in order to reduce the risk of malfunctions. However, at the Žukotrlica road crossing, the main problem is the outdated equipment, which is 56 years old, which is why it is not always possible to quickly eliminate malfunctions. Malfunctions at road crossings can also occur due to bad weather conditions, problems with the power supply or mechanical damage by negligent road users, and are most often the result of a combination of these factors," ŽICG points out.

The long-term solution is the reconstruction of road crossings and the installation of modern signaling and safety equipment, they point out.

"The project for the reconstruction of the Golubovci-Bar railway is underway, which includes the modernization of the crossings: Žukotrlica, Vukovci, Morača, Bistrica and Virpazar, as well as the improvement of other crossings. The installation of new devices, automatic half-bumpers, as well as modern management, supervision and video surveillance systems is planned."

They also referred to the footage of the level crossing posted on social media.

"Regarding the footage on social media, it is important to emphasize that the entire context must be considered. When the devices are not working, the crossing is put out of operation – the ramps are raised, and the signaling does not work. In these situations, traffic flows according to regulations: the driver gives a sound signal, stops the train in front of the crossing and continues only when he is sure that it is safe. In cases where the ramps are lowered for a longer period of time without a train passing, the reason is safety procedures and traffic regulation, the systems are sometimes activated in advance, because safety is always a priority."

They also reminded that safety is the responsibility of all traffic participants, including pedestrians.

"Drivers are required to approach level crossings with caution and respect the signals ("Andrei's Cross" and "STOP"), regardless of the operation of the device. 'Andrei's Cross' obliges drivers to slow down, approach carefully, check for an approaching train and let a train that has the right of way pass."

The 'STOP' sign obliges drivers to stop the vehicle in front of the crossing, after stopping they let the train pass and only then continue moving.

They add that the competent services are working to resolve the problem and improve the system, especially ahead of the tourist season, while constantly monitoring the situation and responding quickly to irregularities.
