The incident was reported to the competent authorities, and this accident occurred when intern AR was mixing several chemical substances, which caused an uncontrolled chemical reaction. Her colleague IJ suffered a serious eardrum injury, and after a medical examination she was discharged for home treatment.

Commenting on this unfortunate event, Janković pointed out that there was most likely a failure in the risk prevention system.

"The mere fact that trainees were injured does not automatically prove negligence, but from a professional perspective it raises serious questions about whether they were adequately trained, informed of the risks and under appropriate supervision."

"An explosion in the workplace is not an "unannounced incident", but a signal that the existence of risk assessment, adequate work organization, clear procedures, control of hazardous materials, appropriate equipment, training and direct supervision of persons performing such activities should be examined," said Janković.

She explained that the fact that the trainees were injured raises the issue of their training and supervision.

"The mere fact that the trainees were injured does not automatically prove negligence, but from a professional perspective it raises a serious question as to whether they were adequately trained, informed of the risks and under appropriate supervision," Janković explained.

She reminded that the Law on Occupational Safety and Health includes both interns and persons undergoing training for work, and that they must be covered by the same protection measures as other employees.

She also stated that the explosion during experimental work indicates a possible failure in key segments of the protection system: risk assessment, control of hazardous materials and processes, work organization, technical conditions of the space, selection and use of equipment, training and supervision.

"Something like this should not be seen as an isolated case, but as a signal that the protection system may not have been established in accordance with the law," Janković warned.

Speaking about responsibility for this incident, she said that the primary responsibility for safe work lies with the employer.

"The law stipulates that the employer must provide occupational health and safety measures, organize work so that risks are controlled, and train employees for safe work," she pointed out.

According to her, measures that need to be taken urgently include: establishing all facts about the working conditions and the cause of the explosion, checking the risk assessment document and procedures for experimental work, checking whether the injured persons were theoretically and practically trained, whether they had appropriate instructions and protective equipment, and whether they were covered by mandatory insurance against injuries at work.

"Something like this should not be seen as an isolated case, but as a signal that the protection system may not have been established in accordance with the law," Janković warned.

"It is particularly important to highlight the position of young people in vocational training programs.
