This year's motto for International Consumer Protection Day is \"Safe Products, Safe Consumers\". Consumers are facing it burdened with an additional problem. There is an increasing number of unsafe products on the market. Among other things, the reason, as Rabrenovi\u0107 assessed, is poor education, but also consumers' interest in what they buy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"If a consumer is not safe, if they are not well educated, then such a consumer is at risk by purchasing goods, primarily food and beverages that are unsafe or do not have sufficient and detailed declared information about the products they are buying,\" said Rabrenovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Olga Nik\u010devi\u0107 from the Consumer Protection Center told us that the position of consumers has improved in the past half a decade, that legal solutions are better, and citizens and traders are informed about consumer rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"As far as the laws are concerned, the laws are in place, the laws are excellent, and a new law was even recently passed that is even more detailed and fully in line with European laws. However, if something significant does not change, the laws are useless. We have always had excellent laws,\" said Nik\u010devi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An additional problem, Rabrenovi\u0107 points out, is online shopping, which means consumers are buying goods of questionable quality without a certificate of the standard valid in the European Union (EU). However, he also notes that European statistics are not great, with warnings issued for over 4,500 dangerous non-food products in the past period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In our country, he points out, we do not have relevant research in this area, nor adequate laboratory capacities for monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"That's a big problem. We buy something cheaper at that moment, but we have no proof or certainty that the product is safe and not harmful to health,\" Rabrenovi\u0107 added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Nik\u010devi\u0107, citizens most often contact the Consumer Protection Center due to observed irregularities in electricity bills, contracts for telecommunications services, and often technical products, the quality of which, as he says, is questionable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"We know that for several years now, the EU itself has admitted that some of their producers have been sending one quality category here to our region, while producing another, more affordable and better quality product for their citizens,\" said Nik\u010devi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the consumer, the price of the product, advertising, speed and habits are decisive, but not complete and reliable information about the product, believes Rabrenovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"Consumers here, which is partly a consequence of the economic situation, and partly also some habits and desires to save money, mostly make their decisions based on price, based on advertisements that are very often misleading, which are not only misleading, but also use the space of consumers' knowledge about these products, so they try to sell them, and unfortunately succeed, and they do so with a lot of different products,\" said Rabrenovi\u0107.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In order to better protect consumers, the Institute of Economic Sciences has launched a six-month monitoring of advertising and sales of products, especially for health, which generally do not have the characteristics and effects stated in the advertisement.
